Fighting poverty in developing nations.

We will feature Microfinance Institutions and organizations in US to introduce to you these MFI. Hopefully, through this posting, you will be able to reach out to them to learn more about what they are doing in the field or to learn about possible opportunity to get involved. We will also be reaching out to these organizations to see if they would like to post at our blog.

Let’s talk about Unitus, a Seattle based nonprofit organization now. I had a personal contact with Unitus while planning the Microfinance panel for the UCLA Anderson Entrepreneurs Conference in May 2008 where Unitus’ representative, Kate Cochran, came to speak to our audience.

According to Unitus’ website, “Unitus is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing innovative, market-based solutions to global poverty.” Unitus partners with local microfinance institutions and guide them in ways to better improve these MFIs’ process and to give them resources (capital, business expertise, system’s tools) to better improve themselves. They are not providing microfinance service themselves but instead, act as a consultant and partner to these microfinance institutions.

Personally, I believe it is great to have this service to help the aspiring social entrepreneurs who are knowledgeable about their local market and provide these entrepreneurs with the tools to help them succeed.
